I no longer believe in SMART goals...⁠

I first learned about SMART goals when I was in business school. If you haven’t heard of SMART goals before, SMART stands for:⁠
⁠
✅ Specific⁠
✅ Measurable⁠
✅ Achievable⁠
✅ Relevant⁠
✅ Timebound⁠
⁠
I used to be a huge fan of the SMART goal method. Logically it totally makes sense, but as I’ve gotten further along in my business I’ve realized that SMART goals actually aren’t really smart at all 🤷🏻‍♀️ ⁠
⁠
In fact, I think SMART goals can be detrimental to an entrepreneur's success AND happiness. SMART goals are made for corporations with quarterly sales goals that have to report to Wall Street. They aren’t made for us.⁠
⁠
As an entrepreneur, it’s important to have goals, but as solopreneurs those goals don’t necessarily have to be numbers and sales. They could be a feeling or the ability to do something like picking your kids up from school. ⁠
⁠
And the most important reason why I no longer believe in SMART goals is because I don’t believe that how quickly or slowly we achieve our goals determines whether or not we are “successful”. Basically, I think the timebound part is BS. ⁠
⁠
You need to hold yourself accountable and make sure you’re taking consistent action towards your goals, but it doesn’t really matter if it takes you 4 weeks or 4 years to achieve them. Everyone is on their own timeline.⁠
⁠
And often when we pressure ourselves to achieve something really fast or set arbitrary deadlines, we don’t do our best work and create self-induced unneeded stress.⁠
⁠
I’m totally guilty of this with my own business. ⁠
⁠
It’s why I’m no longer telling myself I have to achieve or do something by X date. I want to do my best work. I want to continue to enjoy my work. And I trust I will make all of my goals happen if I continue to do those two things -- doesn’t matter if it takes me two weeks, two months, or two years.⁠
⁠
