How did you know it was time to start your own business as a mindset coach?

I don’t think that there’s a linear path for anyone right? Everyone has their own path that they take and it’s crazy and curvy. It’s funny though because those of us that have left a 9-5 to work for ourselves, we generally have a moment that we realize it’s time. For me, I hated going to work every day. All I could think about at work was my business. And then I felt like I was not giving a hundred percent to either of them.

What was something you had to overcome to grow your business?

At one point I realized that I couldn’t hide behind my Psychology Today profile anymore. I had to put myself out there and that was something that was so hard for me. I realized that I had to share my voice and as a therapist, I was taught to have a guard up between myself and clients.

It came down to the benefits of sharing my voice outweighed what could go wrong. I just started to open up and share and the business started to grow, but it took awhile.

The first year of my coaching business I was able to bring in 6 figures, which felt really exciting and something new for me. But that was at the expense of my well being.

I was working around the clock and it wasn’t until I found out I was pregnant with our first that everything sort of came crashing down. Even if you aren’t a mom or not a mom yet, plase still slow down. Take the time to figure out how you can set boundaries with your clients and yourself so you can have a healthy dynamic with your business.

What changes did you make in your business to stay profitable but prioritize your personal life?

Focusing on income-producing activities only has been very powerful. What’s essential right now, cut everything else out. And that’s just what I started to do because I had no time. And I think it really helps us get clear on what our priorities are and what our boundaries are before or after having kids. You just can’t do everything.

After I became a mom I also had to shift my identity. I didn’t have time to coach as much anymore so I started to write. And little by little I got the idea for my book, Thinking Like A Boss.

What are the limiting beliefs you see working with female entrepreneurs?

  1. I’m Not Qualified. So many entrepreneurs believe they need something they don’t have to be successful.
  2. I don’t have enough time, and
  3. I need to have it all together first

The last one is huge. The truth is I don’t think anyone actually has it together. I think that people appear like they have it together. And honestly the ones that sort of appear that way, I’m the most concerned about them. I love following Sarah Blakely of Spanx on Instagram. She’s a hot mess behind the scenes and it shows me that I don’t have to be perfect to show up.

I don’t have to be perfect to show up. Really, we’re all winging it.

How can we start feeling more confident?

I used to think once I became confident, life would be easy. I’ll have it all figured out. But what I realized is once you’re confident in one thing, there’s always going to be the next challenge.

Confidence is a muscle. It’s something we have to continually work on every day. The only way to build your confidence is through consistency. So putting yourself outside of your comfort zone in little ways every day is how you become more confident.
