Social media is part of a great marketing strategy but the numbers that really matter in growing your business don’t have to do with social media. In this episode I’m making the case for email marketing as a priority in your business!
“Email is dead. No one opens emails anymore.”
I have heard this so many times and boy is it wrong. Email marketing has been a vital part of growing my business to 7-figures. And one of the biggest mistakes that I see side hustlers and solopreneurs make is prioritizing social media over building an email list. Instead of spending hours editing your photo, writing and rewriting your caption and researching hashtags, use that time to build your email list! In fact, I reached the million dollar mark before I hit 10,000 followers on Instagram. Now I did have an email list of over 30,000. Simply put, a lot of followers does not mean that you are making a lot of money.
When you’re growing your business, the numbers that really matter have very little to do with social media.
If you want more sales, spend your time on email marketing
Statistically speaking, email marketing is one of the best places to spend your time and energy. If you want more results in sales, which is why we’re here, right? And the good news is that you don’t actually have to spend a ton of time on it for it to be one of the most powerful marketing tools in your business. Here are a few statistics that back this up:
- 73% of millennials prefer communications from businesses come from email over social media
- 99% of consumers use email every single day
- Conversion rates are at least three times higher on email than on social media
Social media is part of a good marketing strategy but it’s not the most important piece.
The best email provider
You know that I am all about Facebook and Instagram ads, but the second most important thing in my business is my email list. And not all email service providers are made the same. I have tried everything. Convertkit, MailChimp, Active Campaign, aWeber, you name it I have tried it. I have finally found my favorite: Flodesk! Your email list is YOURS
The first reason why you should prioritize email over social media is because your email list is yours. Let’s say that you build your social media presence and you are killing it. You have tons of followers and they’re super engaged. They leave lots of comments and they share your stuff and you are rocking the social media thing. Then one day you wake up and your social media profile has been deleted. All of that hard work out the window, and you have no way, literally no way of getting in touch with all of those engaged potential clients, customers, or collaborators. Now I know that this is the extreme, but we’ve also seen how changes to the social media algorithm can dramatically change your reach and engagement in the blink of an eye. One moment, your business is on fire and the next the fire is put out due to a little tweak of the algorithm.
Are you followers even seeing your posts?
The people on your email list have taken the time to sign up. They’ve raised their hand and said, they’re interested in your content and your offers more than the average follower. They trust you more than your social media followers. The goal of moving people through your marketing funnel is to give them a reason to Like, Know, and Trust you.
When you post on social media, you have no idea how many followers Instagram is going to decide to show your posts to. Whereas when you send an email, you know that almost all of your subscribers are going to get it delivered to their inbox.
When you have an email list, you’re able to get your content and your offers directly to your ideal client’s inbox instead of on a feed that the algorithm might show them eventually.
And if you’re lucky about 5% of your social media followers see your posts. But on average, email open rates are anywhere between 15 to 40%. That is a huge increase and it gives you way more potential for you to convert your email subscribers into paying customers. You don’t own your social media followers, but you do own your email list.
Email marketing boosts sales
Now, the second reason why you should prioritize your email list over your social media following is that email boosts sales more than social media. Visibility in email marketing is higher and your subscribers trust you more than just your social media followers. The people on your email list have actually taken the time to sign up and have raised their virtual hand to say that they’re interested in your content and your offers more than the average follower who’s just double tapping to give you a little heart. The goal of moving people through your marketing funnel is to give them a reason to like and trust you more. This creates a relationship that leads to more sales and loyalty.
Convert more potential clients into paying clients
Just like how visibility is higher in email marketing, conversion rates are also higher than social media. So out of the 5% of your followers who actually see your posts on social media, you would be lucky if 0.5 to 1% convert into an actual paying customer or client. Again, that’s 5% of your followers and then 1% of that 5% actually converting into a paying customer through social media. When you increase those numbers to 15 to 40% open rate, and you’re offering your offer to your target audience on the email list, that conversion rate is three times higher on average, and has the potential to even be higher than that. Again, people who have taken the time to actually sign up for your email list, whether it’s through a free webinar or download or on your website or for a discount code, they are primed to buy from you. And they want to hear from you through email.
Email marketing is cheap!
